Description
Rupa Lake, also known as Rupa Tal, stands as a tranquil gem nestled within the borders of Pokhara Metropolitan and Rupa Rural Municipality in the Kaski District of Nepal. Situated at an altitude of 600 meters (1,969 feet), it ranks as the third largest lake in the Pokhara valley, covering an area of approximately 1.35 square kilometers (0.5 square miles). Its elongated shape stretches from north to south, fed by perennial streams and boasting an average water depth of 3 meters (9.8 feet) and a maximum depth of 6 meters (20 feet).
The lake’s watershed area spans 30 square kilometers, with Talbesi stream serving as the primary inflow of water, complemented by Dhovan khola as a feeder stream, ultimately leading to its outlet, Tal khola, at Sistani ghat. Rupa Lake fosters a rich ecosystem, supporting a diverse array of floral and faunal species. Notably, it hosts 36 species of waterbirds, representing approximately 19 percent of Nepal’s total 193 wetland-dependent bird species.
As the second largest lake among the seven lakes in Lekhnath, Rupa Lake lends its name to the nearby village of Rupakot, which is integrated into Lekhnath Municipality. The lake’s surroundings are adorned with a vibrant Nepalese social community, offering travelers a genuine experience of local culture and hospitality.
Despite its lesser-known status compared to the more renowned Begnas Lake, Rupa Lake exudes tranquility and offers breathtaking vistas amidst its verdant hills. The majority of the lake is owned and managed by local cooperative villagers, ensuring its preservation and care.
Rupa Tal, being the sole freshwater lake in Nepal, boasts a unique charm and allure. Boasting a variety of flora and fauna, the lake provides visitors with opportunities for boating and fishing, allowing them to immerse themselves in the serene ambiance and captivating landscape.
For travelers seeking solace and serenity away from the crowds, Rupa Lake emerges as an ideal destination. While it may not enjoy the same level of fame as its counterparts, its unspoiled beauty and authentic cultural experiences make it a hidden gem awaiting discovery in the heart of Pokhara.
