Kapan Monastery, nestled on a hillock north of Boudhanath, stands as one of Nepal’s most renowned monasteries. Belonging to the Gelukpa order of Tibetan Buddhism, this sacred site was established in 1970 on land owned by a royal preceptor of Nepal. Embracing seekers from across the globe, Kapan Monastery offers courses on Tibetan Buddhism, attracting a significant number of students from Western countries. Within its walls, a colossal statue of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Geluk lineage, commands reverence and contemplation.
Perched atop the picturesque Kopan Hills, just a 20-minute drive from Kathmandu’s heart, Kopan Monastery is a captivating Tibetan Buddhist sanctuary, founded in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Drawing spiritual pilgrims and curious travelers alike, it serves as an emblem of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism. Here, one can delve into the ancient teachings by enrolling in short-term courses, offering glimpses into profound ways of living. The monastery’s modest accommodations ensure tranquility, inviting visitors to partake in retreats, courses, or simply soak in the serenity of its surroundings.
Founded by Thubten Yeshe and Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, founders of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, Kopan Monastery was born from a vision to disseminate the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism globally. Over the years, it has grown from a modest assembly of 25 monks to a vibrant community of over 350 individuals, including monks, teachers, lamas, and support staff. In 1981, the monastery welcomed two nuns, marking a significant milestone in its evolution.
The monastery’s curriculum encompasses the profound wisdom of Buddha Shakyamuni, guided meditations, discussions, and a strict vegetarian diet. Aspiring seekers from diverse corners of the world converge here, dedicating themselves to the study and practice of Buddha’s teachings and the lineage of Lama Tsong Khapa. The inclusion of female students led to the establishment of the Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery, providing a sacred haven for women practitioners adjacent to Kopan Monastery.
Whether for a brief interlude or a profound immersion into spiritual inquiry, Kapan Monastery and Kopan Monastery beckon all seekers of peace and wisdom. With open arms and serene landscapes, they offer respite from the clamor of the world, inviting visitors to bask in the tranquility of their sacred spaces, even if only for a fleeting moment.
